justinandClaude Opus 5 841e87c57b feat(mcp): migrate to mcp 2.x (MCPServer), lift the <2 pin
mcp 2.0.0 removed `mcp.server.fastmcp`. This repo was pinned to <2
(6723829) to stop a rebuild from crash-looping the container the way
seed-mcp (2026-09-01) and zerto-docs (2026-08-11) did. This lifts the
pin by doing the port — the same mechanical change as
justin/seed-mcp#23 and justin/morpheus-docs#10.

- import: FastMCP -> MCPServer, plus TransportSecuritySettings
- constructor takes no transport options: MCPServer(f"{PRODUCT_NAME}-docs")
- host/port/stateless_http/transport_security are run() kwargs;
  `mcp.settings` no longer exists
- requirement becomes plain `mcp>=2,<3` (2.x has no [fastmcp] extra)

@mcp.tool() decorators and all handler signatures are unchanged.

CI now smokes `import docs_mcp.server` twice in both workflows — once
after pip install, once inside the built image — so a green build can
never ship a non-importing container again.

Verified on python:3.12-slim (matches the image):
- tools/list dumped in wire format is BYTE-FOR-BYTE IDENTICAL between
  mcp 1.30.0 and 2.2.0, all 10 tools
- streamable-http boots; initialize returns HTTP 200, both from
  localhost and with a container-DNS `Host: hvm-docs-mcp:8000` header
(passing host= to run() keeps DNS-rebinding protection off)
- no mcp-session-id response header, i.e. stateless_http is in effect
- stdio boots; initialize + tools/list return 10 tools
- production image builds and imports under mcp 2.2.0; httpx 0.28.1 and
  httpx2 2.12.0 coexist as expected

Retrieval is untouched, so no eval numbers are included.

Closes #12

justin 6723829bec deps: pin mcp<2 — 2.0.0 removed mcp.server.fastmcp
mcp 2.0.0 moved mcp.server.fastmcp to mcp.server.mcpserver, renamed FastMCP
to MCPServer, and drops the [fastmcp] extra this file requests. With no upper
bound, the next image rebuild resolves to 2.0.0 and the server crash-loops on
import.

That is not hypothetical: it happened to zerto-docs on 2026-08-11 at 02:27
UTC and took the server down until the host was rolled back. This repo shares
the same unpinned line and would fail identically on its next rebuild.

A ceiling, not a migration. The 2.x port is small (the import, the
constructor, and stateless_http moving from the constructor to run()) but it
changes how tool schemas are emitted, which is what decides tool routing, so
it wants a before/after tools/list diff rather than a version bump.

In an ideal scenario, you would have at least four network interfaces spread across at least two network cards on the host (shown in green on the diagram below). Ideally you would also have two separate network switches to help ensure resiliency and redundancy. As mentioned in the prior section, these networking examples are all created with resiliency and redundancy in mind. One storage lane is connected to each switch and likewise one management/VM lane is connected to each switch, which are bonded in and active/backup configuration. Consult the bonding table in the prior section for more details on the benefits and drawbacks to different types of network bonds.
**Example 1**
## Example 1
In this scenario, the bond handles management/VM traffic failover while multipathing handles storage failover. A diagram of such a network setup is shown below:
![A network diagram showing the recommended converged networking setup](https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/api/document/sd00007332en_us/GUID-84F9CBCF-1190-4DC3-88CF-A70AC53F85F7-high.png)
**Example 2**
## Example 2
In the example below, we have native VLAN on the trunk ports and on the storage ports. This means the network switch is tagging all the traffic for you and you don't have to tag it yourself. This allows you to put your IP addresses directly on the interfaces and bonds. Here, the storage VLANS get their own IP address directly on the interface while the management IP address goes directly on the bond as shown in the diagram below. With this configuration, all can be done in the installation wizard as long as the VLANs are piped to the interfaces as expected from the network switches. More specific guidance on using the installation wizard is included in later sections covering the software installation.

**Example 3**
## Example 3
The prior example included native VLANs on the trunk ports and storage ports so we'll now take a look at an example configuration without native VLANs. You need to create VLAN tags on the interfaces because the switch is no longer handling the tagging for you. Your IP addresses then go on those VLAN tags. In this example bond0 becomes the compute interface and bond0.x becomes the management interface when configuring the cluster in a later step (see [Creating an HVM cluster](https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/api/document/sd00007332en_us/render?page=GUID-99397996-8315-49C1-9E2F-2EED51CE03F3.html)). When not using a native VLAN, the storage VLANs still get their own IP address and interface but a VLAN interface gets created on the bond and the management IP address goes on the VLAN interface.

This section will go through the steps to prepare a Windows image for deployment on HVM clusters. This image can serve as a template from which additional images and VM Essentials Library items can be built. This section only discusses the Virtual Image configuration fields needed to be successful with this example Windows deployment. For more generalized information on Virtual Images, including configurations needed for successful Linux deployment, see the **Library** **>** **Virtual Images** of the product user manual.
1. In this example case, we’ll start from downloading a Windows Server ISO directly from the Microsoft download center and go all the way through to creating a new Instance Type in VM Essentials that users can provision on-demand.
2. With the Windows ISO already downloaded, begin by uploading the ISO as a Virtual Image in VM Essentials. Virtual Images are added in Library > Virtual Images. Click + ADD and then choose “ISO.” Before adding the file itself, set the following configurations on the Virtual Image:
- **NAME:** A name for the Virtual Image in VM Essentials, such as “Windows Server 2025 ISO”
- **OPERATING SYSTEM:** “Windows Server 2025”
- **MINIMUM MEMORY:** Filters out Service Plans at provision time which do not meet the minimum value. For this image type, I’ve set 4 GB
3. In addition to the above, there are a number of checkbox configurations here (many of them are in the expandable “Advanced” section), some of which are checked by default. They should all be unchecked except for “VIRTIO DRIVERS LOADED?” within the “Advanced” expandable section.
4. With the configurations set, it’s time to upload the ISO to VM Essentials. Keep in mind that if you do not specify a bucket in which the file should be uploaded, it will be uploaded to the appliance itself. If you choose to do this, be sure you have enough space in your VME Manager appliance to store the images you need. Within the UPLOAD VIRTUAL IMAGE modal is a large drop zone labeled “Drop Files Here.” You can drag and drop the ISO file here or you can click the button labeled **Add File** and browse for it. A progress bar will appear, wait until the file is completely uploaded before you save and dismiss the modal.
In this example case, we’ll start from downloading a Windows Server ISO directly from the Microsoft download center and go all the way through to creating a new Instance Type in VM Essentials that users can provision on-demand.
![Add file](https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/api/document/sd00007332en_us/GUID-EE446E12-71BE-41D8-8396-802AD098FB00-high.png)
5. After the file has completely uploaded, click SAVE CHANGES. Rather than dropping and uploading the file through this modal, users may also select the URL/PATH radio button. This results in a URL field replacing the file drop zone where a URL to external storage containing the image may be entered.
With the Windows ISO already downloaded, begin by uploading the ISO as a Virtual Image in VM Essentials. Virtual Images are added in Library > Virtual Images. Click + ADD and then choose “ISO.” Before adding the file itself, set the following configurations on the Virtual Image:
NOTE
- **NAME:** A name for the Virtual Image in VM Essentials, such as “Windows Server 2026 ISO”
- **OPERATING SYSTEM:** “Windows Server 2026”
- **MINIMUM MEMORY:** Filters out Service Plans at provision time which do not meet the minimum value. For this image type, I’ve set 4 GB
Alternatively, you can source the file from an integrated bucket (if any currently exist) by selecting the bucket in the BUCKET field and entering a path to the image in the URL field. When uploading the image via URL or path, the Virtual Image can be saved and closed as soon as all configurations are finished. Image upload will continue in the background. When uploading via file drop, the modal must remain open until the upload process is completed.
6. Next, we’ll provision a VM from the ISO using the built-in HVM Instance Type. Once running, we will configure the VM to any specific requirements and convert it to a template. Navigate to Provisioning > Instances and click + ADD. On the TYPE tab of the Instance provisioning wizard, we select the Instance Type to provision. In this case, select “HVM” and click NEXT.
7. On the GROUP tab, select the Group and Cloud containing the target MVM Cluster and provide a name for the new Instance. In my case, I have an automatic naming policy setting my Instance name, but depending on your appliance configuration you may need to enter a custom name. Click NEXT.
8. On the CONFIGURE tab, first select the IMAGE. Select the Windows server ISO that was uploaded in the previous step. Based on the minimum memory configuration that was set on the Virtual Image, Plans which are too small will be filtered out. Among compatible Plans, select one that meets your requirements. Next, set the RESOURCE POOL, which is the HVM cluster you’re targeting. Configure disks and disk sizes, as well as network details (this will vary based on HVM cluster configuration).
9. Finally, select the HOST, which is the HVM host within the cluster that the new Instance should initially be provisioned onto.
10. As a final step, we need to also expand the “Advanced Options” section and make sure “ATTACH VIRTIO DRIVERS” is checked. This will attach an ISO containing the VirtIO drivers which we’ll use later. Click NEXT.

11. The final two tabs of the wizard, AUTOMATION and REVIEW, do not require any configuration changes though you may want to review the Instance settings on the final tab. When done, click COMPLETE.
12. Click on the newly provisioning Instance from the Instances list page. Since this image is being provisioned for the first time, the image must be uploaded to the HVM host. This can take a little bit of time but any future attempts to provision workloads from this image will skip this step. Wait for the Instance to fully complete and appear in a green “Ready” status.
13. Once the Instance has fully finished provisioning, launch a console session by clicking ACTIONS and then **Open Console**. This will open a new window with a console session into the VM.

# Qualification Matrix for HVM Clusters Managed By HPE Morpheus Software
# Qualification Matrix for HVM clusters managed by HPE Morpheus Software
This document contains the list of hardware and software that has been tested and confirmed to support HVM Clusters managed by HPE Morpheus Software at scale. **Items not included in this list may be compatible but are untested.** Using untested hardware or software may limit the scope of support services available from HPE support teams.
HPE support teams will support the HPE HVM Hypervisor running on any system that has been certified for Canonical Ubuntu 24.04. For future releases of the HVM Hypervisor, this support statement will only apply to the Ubuntu version certified. Consider any guidelines that the hardware vendor might have in place for every specific model.
New hardware and software are continually being tested and certified. This document will be updated over time as new hardware SKUs are confirmed compatible and performant at scale.
NOTE
There is a self-validation program for partners to quickly validate their solutions for compatibility with HVM. For more information about the program, see [the self-validation program documentation](https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/a00155725enw?jumpid=in_pdfviewer-psnow).

Most modern applications like databases were designed with very “loose” dependence on hardware infrastructure. They can typically run on a variety of hypervisors including virtual machines and containers. The respective ISV vendor typically only specifies the supported underlying operating system (Guest OS) but does not require certification of any hypervisor. However, there can be specific features that a customer deployment of these applications requires at a hypervisor or infrastructure level. For example, a Microsoft SQL Server Failover cluster instance requires a shared disk between multiple SQL Server VMs. Oracle, similarly, requires shared disks for an Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) setup. Therefore, it needs to be always validated whether the specific deployment requires certain features and whether these are supported by VM Essentials in its latest release.

Select ISV applications require “full stack” certifications including OS, hypervisor, compute and storage devices, or even the specific storage connectivity protocol. SAP HANA and related SAP applications are a typical example; so are some Healthcare Electronic Health Record (EDR) applications. If you or your customer plans on running one of these applications, contact your HPE account team.

# v9.0.0 Release Notes
# v9.0.0 LTS Release Notes
- Compatible Plugin API version: 1.4.1
- Compatible HPE Morpheus VM Essentials Worker version: 5.4.8+
Release Dates
- v9.0.0 June 2026
After upgrading to v9.0.0, it is recommended to check for HVM Host agent upgrades as well. To upgrade HVM Host agents, navigate to the detail page for each HVM Host, expand the ACTIONS menu, and click "Upgrade Agent." This process must be undertaken on all HVM Hosts. Alternatively, you may select "Download Agent Script" to download a shell script to handle the upgrade. Connect to the HVM Host over a terminal session and run the downloaded script. The scripts are unique to each HVM Host so you must download all required scripts and run the correct script against the correct HVM Host. Though many do, it is possible that some version upgrade hops will not contain an HVM Host agent upgrade.
# New features
Alletra MP Plugin
: For complete update details, see the [HPE Storage Integration Pack for VM Essentials Release Notes](https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=sd00008055en_us).
AI and Automation
: - Introduced a "Read-only mode" for AI agents and a corresponding RBAC permission that restricts agents to data retrieval only, preventing them from performing any modification or "agentic" actions
- Added a new management interface under Tools > AI Services for creating and configuring AI Agents, including model selection and MCP server assignments
- Added a management interface for Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, allowing users to connect external tool providers to AI agents via STDIO or HTTP protocols
- Introduced a provider abstraction layer that supports integrating external LLM services like OpenAI and GitHub Copilot for use within the Morpheus AI framework
- Enhanced AI Integration framework for LLM and MCP providers. Endpoints enable execution through Agent Tasks and Agent Tasks.
- MCP Server Support for the enablement of AI assistants (including GitHub, Copilot CLI, and, Claude Desktop), through a built-in MCP server exposing the Morpheus REST API. Supports Streamable HTTP and legacy SSE transports.
- Private Cloud system initialization wizard to streamline onboarding and provide an extensible plugin compliant framework.
API & CLI
: - Reintroduced and improved API token management with a dedicated API Keys tab in User Settings.
- Support for multiple auth tokens per user, enabling parallel operations across large federated deployments.
Aruba CX
: - VLAN IDs specified in trunk ranges are now automatically configured on Aruba CX switches if they do not already exist, simplifying large-scale network provisioning
- Standard networks now support hybrid and trunk-only modes, allowing multiple tagged VLANs to be carried over a single interface with corresponding automatic switch configuration
- Security Groups integration for the ArubaCxDss network plugin.
HVM
: - HPE Morpheus Essentials v9.0.0 includes a new cluster layout for HVM Clusters, version 1.3, which succeeds version 1.2. The primary difference in cluster layout 1.3 is the replacement of Pacemaker as the resource manager for GFS2 datastores (now known as HPE Clustered Datastores). Rather than Pacemaker observing the reported state of Corosync and making fencing decisions, the Morpheus Agent becomes the high-availability control plane, providing even greater reliability for HPE Clustered Datastores in HVM Clusters. HPE Morpheus Advanced v9.0.0+ also includes a one-click upgrade to take existing 1.2 HVM Clusters to cluster layout version 1.3. For more information about upgrading HVM Clusters, see Cluster Layout Upgrade in the HPE HPE Morpheus Essentials user manual.
- Added a type-ahead "Search servers" field and a general search field to the Backups History page to allow users to filter back-up records by specific virtual machines or servers
- Users can now modify advanced virtual machine options after deployment, including UEFI/BIOS firmware toggles, Secure Boot, and a new "Boot to BIOS" flag with a configurable timeout for troubleshooting
- Enhanced the Dynamic Placement system with adjustable aggressiveness profiles (Conservative, Moderate, Aggressive) and migration cooldowns to better balance cluster resources based on memory utilization
- Automated the injection of VirtIO drivers during bulk migrations from VMware to HVM, eliminating the need for manual driver preparation on Windows virtual machines
- Stretched Cluster Support spanning multiple logical sites as a single cluster for both uniform and non-uniform configurations. Live Migration is supported for VMs enabled with Secure Boot.
- Guest OS Encryption (vTPM/SecureBoot) automated recovery from back-up for VMs using BitLocker/vTPM.
- Memory Overallocation on HVM clusters.
- Support for Two-Node GFS2 clusters using an external quorum witness.
- Shared vDisks to assign vDisks to multiple guest VMs simultaneously.
- Allow VMs to boot via PXE/network boot for customers with established deployment automation workflows.
- Enable BIOS Asset Tag Configuration for VMs at creation and Day 2.
- Support audit logging and traceability in morphd for tracking of user identity for libvirt and virsh actions.
- SR-IOV network type to enable VMs to have direct, near wire-speed access to physical network adapters.
- Trunk VLAN Support for standard networks. Support for multiple VLAN traffic on a single interface (access, hybrid and trunk-only modes).
- HVM Network Plugin for standard, private, data, and overlay. Enable decoupled networking management through dedicated plugin via the Network Provider framework.
- Morpheus appliance deb/rpm packages contain all files, agents, plugins, and dependencies. Supplemental packages are no longer required for installation or upgrades.
User Interface (UI)
: - Added React UI for modernized navigation framework and administration.
Supportability
: - End-to-end supportability, including support bundle generation, environment telemetry, health metrics, operational runbooks, and RBAC-controlled access.
- Host Hardware Sensor Metrics Enhancements for improved metrics based on feedback.
# Fixes
Platform Updates
: - Embedded MySQL updated to 8.4.x LTS; non-embedded support extended to 8.4.x or above.
Agent
: - Fixed storage reporting errors on older Linux distributions and systems using btrfs subvolumes that resulted in zero or inflated storage usage values
API & CLI
: - Fixed an issue where the API and CLI did not correctly return all associated resource pools for networks assigned to multiple pools
- Updated the default API token expiration for system clients (morph-api, morph-cli, and morph-customer) to 30 days to improve security posture
HVM
: - Fixed an issue where virtual machines on a data network with a 9000 MTU could not communicate using jumbo packets until the network interface was manually reset
- The system now automatically enforces a single active heartbeat datastore per HVM Cluster to prevent failover ambiguity and quorum conflicts
- Fixed a keyboard mapping issue that prevented the AltGr key from functioning correctly when using the console on HVM-based virtual machines.
- Creating HVM Active/Passive Bond (mii-polling-rate, up-delay, and down-delay configurations now applied automatically during provisioning.

# v9.0.1 LTS Release Notes

# New features
API & CLI
: - Added the ability to update a cluster layout version via the API and CLI, enabling automated upgrades of HVM clusters between versions.
HVM
: - Updated virtual machine templates to include 2023 base boot loader certificates, ensuring support for future secure boot updates from Microsoft and other vendors.
Morpheus Core
: - Introduced license tier-based gating (VM Essentials/Advanced/Enterprise) for AI-related features.
- Enabled Morpheus Central websocket configuration by default in the installer to simplify registered tunnel connections.
- New Administration > Settings > Morpheus Central tab provides an activation code for registering a Morpheus Appliance to Morpheus Central and displays registration status. See [Adding an appliance](https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=sd00008095en_us&page=mc_add_appliances_glp.html) in Using HPE Morpheus Central for more information.
Networking
: - Updated the HVM Network Plugin to preserve existing networks on a node when the node is deleted from the cluster.
- Updated the ArubaCX Network Plugin to preserve existing OVS networks on switches when a node is deleted from the cluster.
# Fixes
HVM
: - Fixed an issue where HVM cluster layout upgrades could fail during the finalize phase, sometimes causing nodes to incorrectly re-enter maintenance mode or the UI to report an incorrect layout version.
- Resolved an issue where cluster creation could fail after adding nodes due to a mismatch in bundled UEFI firmware asset versions.
- Fixed a race condition where cluster layout upgrades could fail if a host entered maintenance mode while its agent was still in a post-restart recovery cycle.
- Resolved an issue where long-running cluster layout upgrades could fail if the database connection was closed by the connection pool during the finalize phase.
- Fixed an issue where HVM layout upgrades would fail if host agents were not manually upgraded beforehand; the process now correctly handles automated agent upgrades.
- Resolved an issue where a GFS2 datastore (now called HPE Clustered Datastore (Shared LUN) in the Morpheus UI) could incorrectly enter a read-only state following a kernel upgrade and node reboot.
- Fixed an issue where SCSI reservation keys were not properly cleared from multipath configurations during a layout upgrade to HVM 1.3.
- Resolved an issue where backup restoration or VM cloning would fail if the original source image had been deleted from the library.
- Fixed formatting and labeling inconsistencies on the HVM cluster summary page.
CLI
: - Added missing CLI commands and prompts to configure heartbeat targets and secure metadata parameters for clustered datastores.
Morpheus Core
: - Fixed an issue where refreshing the browser on the Support Bundles tab would incorrectly redirect the user to the main Health tab.
- Resolved a "permission denied" error during Morpheus agent upgrades on hosts where the /tmp directory is mounted with noexec permissions.
- Fixed a regression where editing a storage server from the list view would result in blank URL and credential fields.
- Fixed an installer issue where upgrades could fail with a "ports are listening" error if the initial appliance configuration had not completed successfully.
- Fixed an issue where the UI failed to display an error message when a network configuration save operation failed.
- Fixed a regression where overly restrictive validation prevented the use of special characters in instance names shown in the Morpheus UI.
- Fixed an issue where RabbitMQ plugin enablement could fail during an appliance upgrade due to deprecated policies.
Plugin AlletraMP
: - Fixed an issue where creating a storage volume under an existing volume set would incorrectly create a new volume set instead.
